The Basics of Branding

What is a brand?

A brand is what distinguishes one company from another. ‘Brand’ comes from livestock branding: when people used branding irons to identify their livestock from another’s.

What’s the difference between a logo and a brand?

A brand is more than just a logo: a logo is only one component of a brand, albeit a crucial part of it. A brand also includes the company’s slogan or tagline, and all design elements and colours associated with the logo and company. A brand tells the company’s story and mission, and it should connect to its targeted audience emotionally. Most importantly, a brand needs to be consistent.

What are some important components to a strong brand?

To have a successful brand, keep these things in mind:

  • Know your mission
What is your company about? What are you hoping to achieve?
  • Know your target audience
Whether it’s age group, gender, or a multitude of other demographics, know who you want to attract.
  • Have a clear message
What message do you want to send to your target audience? What kind of emotional response do you want them to have?
  • Find your ‘voice’
Tongue-in-cheek or serious? Casual or luxury? Your company’s tone should speak to your target audience.
  • Be consistent
Your brand needs to be applicable across multiple platforms and your ‘voice’ should always be the same.

What we do and our process

At Pixel Foundry, we work closely with our clients from the start. We will help you iron out a clear message for your company before working on design concepts. We take all client feedback into consideration during the design process. Once artwork is approved, we will work on applying the artwork across all needed platforms, such as websites, social media accounts, business cards, and stationery.
